"huh? what?" asked Scout as she sleepily woke up.
" here just put this robe on and lets walk outside," I told Scout.
Scout, Jem and I went outside to see what all the commotion was. Ms. Maudie's house was burning to the ground. The Neighbors were doing the best they could but that wasn't enough. Ms. Maudie was a very nice lady. She would always talk to Jem and Scout. It was a tragedy that it happened to her out of all people.
I could see that Scout and Jem wanted to do something about it in return for the kindness that Ms. Maudie brought to them but they couldn't. Scout and Jem just stood there in the cold. I looked over at Scout and she was very cold so I put my coat on her. A little bit later I saw someone come up right behind Scout. it was Boo Radley. At first I was going to do something about his approach but than I saw that he was holding a blanket to put on Scout. I thought it was Boo Radley who was lighting the houses on fire but my thoughts changed when he did this. I looked over and I could see a fire truck being pushed my many men. I knew that it wouldn't get to the burning house in time to save anything.
Thank God that Ms. Maudie came out alright. Soon the fire truck that was being pushed made it. They turned out the fire hydrant and started trying to put out the fire.
The other day I was talking to Scout about how kids were treating her at school. She said that there was one kid who would tease Scout about her father defending a nigger. She said that a boy tormented her in front of a lot of people that I was defending a nigger. At first I was shocked that such little kid had the potential of digging into their deepest sources to rip out information that they could use against a child that they didn't like. But I knew that now I would have to explain to Scout about my client. I explained to Scout that there would be a lot of talk around town about me defending a negro. I told her that even though I though we were going to lose I had this feeling that told me that the right thing to do was represent the man. I felt that if I was in the position where I would most likely be killed for something I didn't do, that I would want someone to help me out. This case was very important to me because I knew that if I didn't take the case than no one would. I knew that at some point Scout would hit her high point and engage in fighting.
